Lisbon's Hidden Gem - Aroeira Golf Club
Aroeira is truly a hidden gem in the southern area of Lisbon. The golf courses are magnificent with two courses to choose from. Play the Challenge course or the Aroeira Pines Classic course. Both are great and truly, there is not much to pick between them! As a 36-hole set-up, both are well worth including in your itinerary, particularly if staying in the Aroeira Hotel.
Aroeira Challenge Course
The Challenge course is considered the second course but by no means is it weak. A very different test to the Pines. Very walkable but with strategic bunkering and some lakes to negotiate on your way around! With tree-lined fairways, it is very easy on the eye throughout your round. It can be tight in places so straight hitters will be rewarded even more so around here but watch out for those fairway bunkers.
Aroeira Challenge Course >Aroeira Pines Classic Course
The Pines Classic is the original 18 holes within the development and is a must-play if staying in the Lisbon area or if in one of the nearby accommodation options. Famed golf course architect Frank Pennink designed the golf course in 1972 so it does have a lot of history about it. For those who don’t know, Pennink was the creator of other famous golf courses in Portugal including the Old Course in Vilamoura and the original 18 at Palmares. Like the Challenge course, there are trees galore but the fairways are more generous and forgiving and no fairway bunkers either to keep the round as fair as possible! The back nine is arguably the better of the two and where the course really does come to life with water on a couple of holes to contend with.
What is for sure is that the conditioning and environment created makes golf at Aroeira a very special experience and in our view, must play for any golf break in Lisbon.
Work has begun to further enhance Aroeira Pines Classic golf course. Among the changes being implemented, extensive renovations will be made to the bunkers, tees, greens, course landscaping and irrigation system to greatly improve the playing experience on offer.
