Clovelly Country Club

Nestled in the tranquil Silvermine Valley between Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay, the Clovelly Country Club
rewards accuracy off the tee and provides players with scenic views of the False Bay coastline.
Known for its year round conditioning, the relatively short course possesses a unique character by virtue of its proximity to the sea. The dune lined fairways lead to excellent bent grass and poa annua greens; while the many trees create shelter from the strong summer sea breeze. The rolling computer-irrigated fairways complement visually pleasing water features, which impact the 1st, 10th, 15th and 17th holes. The signature hole is the 4th, a par-4 with out-ofbounds and a stream on the left, and a green guarded by a water hazard. The clubhouse presents a high vantage point not only of the 18th hole, but also the 1st and 10th which both feature sharp doglegs, to the right and left respectively.

Erinvale Country & Golf Estate Golf Course

The Erinvale golf course, designed by the legendary Gary Player, is conveniently located on the borders of Somerset West and only half an hour from the vibrant Cape Town. Having hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and the second oldest tournament in the world, the prestigious SAA Open in 2003 and 2004, Erinvale is no stranger to worldwide media coverage. Built on a narrow stretch of land which escalates
sharply uphill, Erinvale is an estate course with two distinctly different nines. The front nine is flat, winding its way through the park-like terrain estate which calls for challenging approach shots to the long narrow putting surfaces, while the back nine meanders through the foothills of the magnificent Helderberg, with breathtaking views of the False Bay coastline from the top holes. The signature par-four 17th hole requires golfers to play downhill from an elevated tee, with tall pines flanking one side of the fairway, and an out-ofbounds fence the other.

Steenberg Golf Estate Golf Course

Rated among the top 3 golf courses to visit in South Africa, Steenberg, nestled in the crook of the Constantiaberg Mountains, lives up to its fame with a charming location amidst vineyards. Designed by the eminent golf course architect Peter Matkovich, Steenberg follows his principle that good golf course architects “listen to the land”. The greens on the course are especially laudable, but the quality of the fairways or the rest of the course is in fact, equally impressive. Signature holes are the 7th and the 14th, with the longest green in Africa on the latter. Large aprons around the greens are another special feature and the vineyards also provide a unique visual aspect, as well as a charming added hazard. Recently voted “Top foreign golf resort” by Conde Nast Traveller readers, Steenberg is one of the most prestigious golf courses in South Africa.

Westlake Golf Club

Set in the leafy Cape Town suburb of Lake Side, with its back enclosed in the walls of the Silvermine Mountains, Westlake Golf Course has gained an illustrious reputation as one of the Cape’s premiere courses. The natural beauty and wildlife that the surrounding mountains have added bring forth an element that most city suburb golf courses can only dream of. Towering flat pine trees which line many of the fairways are a highlight as well as a characteristic feature of the course. To achieve a good score, you have to stay out of the trees. Westlake has an interesting but user-friendly design and quite a few doglegs. From the first to the eighteenth hole, every step affords panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The par 4, 12th, Westlake’s signature hole deserves a special mention with tall pines flanking the right hand side of the fairway and offering a challenge to most golfers.

Montagu Golf Course at Fancourt

Voted the number one golf course in South Africa in 2000, the Montagu Golf Course at Fancourt is named after the mountain pass of the same name, and is part of the original 27-hole design at Fancourt by the legendary Gary Player in the early 90s. This classic tree-lined parklands layout underwent a major facelift in 2005 under renowned Scottish golf architect David McLay Kidd. The upgrade saw two completely new holes - the 1st and the 9th., redefined bunkers and greens and introduction of several water features such as the dam. Celebrated for its immaculate, round the year conditioning, the Montagu GC is currently ranked at #6 in South Africa (Golf Digest, 2014). The signature hole is the Par-3 17th, reminiscent of the 12th hole at Augusta National - the permanent home of the US Masters.

Outeniqua Golf Course at Fancourt

A majestic 18-hole parkland layout at Fancourt, designed by the legendary Grand Slam golfer Gary Player, the Outeniqua is quite similar to the Montagu and offers challenging design and fine conditioning to ensure an excellent test for all levels of golfers. With play being restricted to hotel residents, members and their guests, the course rarely seems crowded and you can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable round of golf at your pace. Although set in the same surroundings as its better known counterparts, the Outeniqua has developed an individual personality rivalling the others. As with all courses at Fancourt, there are a variety of tees from which to choose to play, ensuring that golfers are unlikely to ever feel overpowered by the course. Excellent water features and creeks interspersed with uphill and downhill challenges and excellent bunkering (recently renovated) are all augmented in the charm and challenge by the colourful flora to be seen throughout the course.
