La Reserve Golf Links
David Bates, GolfKings Sales Team Manager, was the lucky member of staff to head out to Mauritius to be one of the first golfers in the world to play a round of golf on the newest golf course on the island, La Reserve Golf Links at Heritage Golf Club.
The 'first contemporary links course' in the Indian Ocean, La Reserve is not due to open until December 2023, making David very privileged to get 18 holes play in before the grand opening of the course, when it hosts the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open later this year. Co-designed by Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Matkovic, the latter of which designed Le Chateau Golf Course at Heritage, La Reserve plays from the highest point on the golf course at Hole 1, to the lowest at the green on Hole 18.
On arrival at the clubhouse (which is yet to be finished, but will be spectacular when done) you get a feel for the scale of the project undertaken by Heritage Resorts, to create a truly beautiful golf course across the stunning landscape of Bel Ombre. It is a short courtesy shuttle from Heritage Le Telfair or Awali, where you then pick your buggy and make your way on the drive to the first tee. On the drive up, you get glimpses of what a treat you are in for in your upcoming round of golf. The journey takes around 10 minutes, but time flies by as you take in the stunning views out to the Indian Ocean. This is a theme throughout your round, with every hole having its own unrestricted view down to the coast and out to the blue waters.
On the first tee you are treated to a complimentary Glenfiddich Whisky, to help you limber up for your opening tee shot, which is par 4 from an elevated tee to a generous fairway. There are highlights all the way throughout the round, I really enjoyed the 6th hole, a gettable par 4 fraught with danger all the way down the left side, with a collection of pot bunkers on one side of the green and the other side perched on the edge of a large lake. This is then followed by a magnificent par 3 over the same lake, where you do not want to be short!
There is some respite after the 9th, with a halfway refreshment in the shape of some freshly baked biscuits and a delicious iced tea. You can take a load off and really bask in the beauty of the golf course and the surroundings.
These views are some of the best I have ever encountered on a golf course, it is a treat for the eyes and the soul.
On the back 9, my favourite moments are another driveable par 4, with a scenic tee-shot to a green at the 13th hole, where you will find a pretty nasty pot bunker, right in the middle of the putting surface. You are then treated to the same incredible infinity green sight on the 16th hole, where 3 massive bunkers guard the green on this make or break par 4. The 18th hole is a drama inducing par 5, with a creek splitting the fairway in front of the green (right where you would like to lay up).
La Reserve Golf Links has all the makings of golf course destined to be top 100 in the world. Coupled with the excellent accommodation options at Heritage Le Telfair and Awali and the other championship golf course at Le Chateau, Heritage Resorts is now certainly one of the best golf resorts in the world and an absolute must visit for any avid golfer.
“A huge thank you to everyone at Heritage Resorts for their generous invitation and incredible hospitality throughout my stay, it was a privilege and an experience I will remember fondly” - David Bates
