Golf at the Ritz-Carlton Abama

I was lucky enough to stay in the 5-star Ritz-Carlton Abama to sample the resort firsthand. Occupying a unique piece of land on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the Abama resort sits in an area officially called Guia de Isora which is 20 minutes from Costa Adeje and just 5 minutes from the local fishing village called Playa San Juan which has a small harbour and handful of restaurants and bars.

 

Weather in Tenerife

A year-round golf destination, Tenerife is widely known as a winter destination with average temperatures between November and March of around 22-24 degrees. Perfect golfing weather!

Temperatures in the summer are hotter but with a cooling Atlantic breeze ensuring temperatures of around 27-28 degrees.

 

Why go to Ritz-Carlton Abama?

The hotel has such a wide appeal due to the set up of the resort. The resort is comprised of the main hotel building with its striking design features and then cascading down from the main building are 4 rows of rooms called villas which are ground and first floor only. Each row of villas has access to a lagoon style swimming pool and are only a short walk from the main building itself. With lush gardens separating the villas, it is truly an exceptional place to stay.

Within the rows of villas, there are the Tagor Villas which are an adult only hotel within a hotel style set up. All check in is done at the exclusive Tagor Villa reception area and you have an exclusive pool area where drinks and snacks are served around the swimming pool on a complimentary basis.

Our recommendation is to upgrade to an ocean view room either within the main building or the villas. The views are stunning overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and island of La Gomera. The setting couldn’t be better.

Onsite at Abama there are a selection of excellent restaurant and bars to enjoy including two Michelin star restaurants. My favourites include El Mirador and 20/20 steakhouse – both fantastic quality and a true dining experience.

Abama is perfect for golfing couples and groups who are seeking a refined golf resort that offers everything on your doorstep with no need to step outside of the Abama resort bubble.

A 5-minute courtesy shuttle from the hotel reception takes you to the clubhouse at Abama Golf Club. It couldn’t be easier! If you have your own buggy, you can take yourself to the clubhouse instead!

 

Abama Golf Club

A brilliant Dave Thomas design and in my view, one of the very best courses in the Canary Islands. A relatively gentle start then starts taking you up the side of Mount Teide before playing down with some excellent signature holes with elevated tee shots playing towards the hotel and unbeatable views over the Atlantic Ocean.

The golf course is a tough test but very rewarding too. The greens are amongst the most difficult I have played but relax, you are on holiday!

Buggies are always included and you most definitely need them round Abama Golf Club. All buggies have GPS installed too.

The clubhouse is great with a brilliant terrace to enjoy a tasty post round lunch and drink.

 

Top Tips for golf at the Ritz Carlton Abama

• If looking for the best price, travel between May and September, book an ocean view room and then you can benefit from Unlimited Golf
• Planning to stay onsite in the evenings? Book half board as the inclusions are very good
• Book one of the Villa rooms as you can benefit from breakfast in the tranquil and unrivalled setting of El Mirador restaurant – exclusive breakfast for Villa guests!
• Store your golf clubs at the clubhouse to avoid needing to take them up and down each day
• Enjoy an afternoon at the virtually private beach at Abama. Accessible via funicular or walk.
• If seeking an adult only experience then book the Tagor Villas.
