Royal Troon Golf Club
Royal Troon Golf Club is an absolute must play for every golfer who loves traditional links golf. The dunes are low and not overbearing, though this allows for the sea breeze to hit every hole on the course. A regular stop on The Open circuit, it has played host to some great championships over the years.
Royal Troon is a classic “out and back” links course, where it is regularly said that you must score on the front 9 and just try to survive the back 9. The prevailing wind helps you 8 out of the 9 opening holes, the exception being the infamous par 3 eighth hole. The Postage-Stamp. It is the shortest hole on any course that hosts The Open Championship, and depending on the weather it can range from a sand wedge to a 4 iron off the tee. Missing the green will mean a par is the best you can do and any other number more than 3 is a distinct possibility.
The last Open Champion played at Royal Troon has been considered by many to be the best final days play that has ever taken place. Henrik Stenson was crowned the champion golfer of the year, after defeating Phil Mickelson by 2 shots in what was named “Duel of the Sons”. They shot 63 and 65 respectively, trading birdies and eagles all day.
